Technology Behind Volvo’s Electric Machines and Their Efficiency

Volvo’s L120 electric wheel loader and EC230 electric excavator combine eco-friendly technology with high performance. Both machines are equipped with a powerful 600V lithium-ion battery system. The L120 has a 282kWh battery, offering up to nine hours of runtime, depending on the task. It also features a fast-charge option, allowing a full charge in two hours with a 150kW DC charger. This ensures minimal downtime on construction sites where efficiency is paramount.

Both machines are designed to recapture energy. The regenerative braking system recycles energy generated during deceleration, extending battery life and overall runtime. Additionally, active cooling and heating systems optimise the performance of the battery and electric motors, ensuring reliability in varying conditions, from colder climates to Malaysia’s hot and humid weather.

The EC230 electric excavator, with a 1.44 cubic metre bucket and a maximum operating weight of 23 tons, can handle substantial construction tasks. Its impressive digging reach of over 10 metres makes it well-suited for large-scale projects. Both models maintain their power while achieving significant reductions in emissions, offering a green alternative to traditional diesel-powered machinery.

Early trials have demonstrated the impact of Volvo’s electric machines. The EC230, tested in the US, reduced carbon emissions by 66% and operational costs by 74%. Similarly, in a 90-day pilot test, the L120 achieved an 80% reduction in carbon emissions and 83% cost savings compared to its diesel equivalent. Such figures show the immense potential for long-term cost savings and environmental benefits.

Volvo’s electric equipment could revolutionise construction practices for Malaysia’s growing infrastructure sector. By incorporating sustainable technologies and aligning its construction industry with national green goals, the country can reduce carbon emissions.
