The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is advancing sustainable construction practices through a robust alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and eco-friendly building initiatives showcased at ICW & BuildXpo 2024. With global environmental concerns at the forefront, CIDB is dedicated to promoting green building designs that conserve energy, incorporate sustainable materials, and reduce carbon emissions.
Through initiatives like MyCREST (Malaysian Carbon Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Tool), CIDB quantifies the environmental impacts of construction projects, ensuring best practices that support low-carbon development. MyCREST emphasises life cycle assessments that cover stages from design to operation, helping builders minimise emissions and adopt energy-efficient practices that contribute to SDGs, including clean energy and sustainable cities.
ICW & BuildXpo 2024 also highlight green building technologies and eco-conscious construction materials. For example, innovations in nano paint technology, which can regulate temperature and absorb carbon dioxide, are set to make buildings more energy-efficient. Smart building systems further aid sustainability by optimising resource use in real-time, cutting down on waste, and promoting responsible consumption, which aligns with SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production.
CIDB’s commitment extends to educating industry stakeholders on sustainable practices, promoting eco-friendly alternatives to conventional methods, and fostering a mindset of environmental stewardship within the industry. With these efforts, CIDB aims to prepare Malaysia’s construction sector for a greener future that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility.
