Hong Kong Scientists Develop Innovative Bar-Bending Robot

Hong Kong is making strides in developing robotics technology to address labour shortages in the construction industry. Researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have created a cutting-edge robot capable of automating the traditionally labour-intensive task of bending and fixing steel reinforcement bars, commonly known as rebar.

Rebar bending is a physically demanding task, often requiring construction workers to spend hours manually shaping steel bars, which are critical for reinforcing concrete structures. The process involves bending the bars and tying them together at intersections—a repetitive and strenuous job. Integrating robotics into this process allows the newly developed machine to move along the rebar autonomously, performing bends and ties without human intervention.

Introducing robots solves the labour shortages plaguing the construction sector, particularly in Hong Kong. Due to the scarcity of skilled workers and the increasing complexity of modern construction demands, there has been a rising demand for automation in construction projects.

According to researchers, the robot uses AI-powered sensors and advanced automation technologies to efficiently navigate the rebar grid, executing precise bends and ties with minimal human supervision. This innovation promises to significantly increase the speed and accuracy of construction tasks while also improving worker safety by reducing exposure to hazardous manual labour.

Furthermore, the development of construction robots aligns with the broader global trend of using automation to enhance efficiency and solve labour shortages in industries that rely heavily on manual work. Similar robotic technologies are already in use in countries like Japan and the United States, where construction automation is helping to meet growing infrastructure needs.

By embracing robotics, Hong Kong’s construction industry sets a precedent for how the sector can evolve with technological advancements, making work environments safer and projects more efficient.
