Gamuda Bhd and its consortium have been appointed to deliver the first civil works package, valued at over RM8 billion, for the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, a joint venture with Gamuda holding a 60% stake, will construct the 24km Mutiara Line. This line, which includes 19 stations and related facilities, will connect Komtar in George Town to Island A of the Penang South Reclamation project.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the project aims to simplify and expedite implementation. The contract, with a ceiling of RM8.31 billion, is expected to be completed in six years once the notice to proceed is issued.
Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) will oversee the project as its developer and asset owner. The tender for the second and third project packages, which include additional lines and system integration, will proceed in 2025.
The federal government, which took over the project in March 2024, has budgeted RM10–13 billion for the LRT. About 40% of subcontracts will go to Bumiputera companies, prioritising Penang-based firms to boost local employment and the supply chain.
Gamuda expressed its commitment to delivering the transformative project on time and within budget, enhancing connectivity and supporting Penang’s transportation master plan.
