YTL Cement takes a bold step towards sustainable construction by unveiling ECOConcrete, an innovative building material designed to address environmental concerns associated with traditional concrete production.

Concrete, a fundamental pillar of the construction industry, has long been under scrutiny for its environmental impact, particularly regarding producing its key ingredient – cement. Clarisse Loh, Head of Sustainability at YTL Cement Group, confronted these concerns during her presentation at the ICTC 2023, introducing ECOConcrete as a transformative solution.

Loh emphasised, “The environmental challenge with concrete centres around cement, a primary ingredient produced through the heating of limestone, releasing significant CO2. Furthermore, coal combustion in cement production adds to CO2 emissions, making traditional concrete a substantial contributor to greenhouse gases.”

YTL Cement, recognising the environmental challenges posed by traditional concrete production, tackles this issue through its Construction Development Laboratory (CDL).

This ISO/IEC 17025-certified facility reflects YTL’s dedication to sustainable construction practices, focusing on research and development to create tailored solutions for construction needs in collaboration with customers.

To quantify the carbon emissions associated with concrete production, YTL Cement’s CDL conducts extensive research. This state-of-the-art facility, equipped with labs for cement, concrete, aggregate, and soil, plays a crucial role in understanding the environmental impact of construction materials.

Stay tuned for part two, where we will delve into the advantages of ECOConcrete, exploring how this innovative building material sets a new standard for sustainable construction practices.
