17 Dec 2023: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) urges all project owners and contractors to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of construction sites during the monsoon season that is now sweeping across the country. Adverse weather conditions with heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds pose a high risk to safety at the construction site and regularly cause machinery damage.
In the case of the crane falling and blocking the commuter track last Tuesday, CIDB’s preliminary investigation found that the crane fell due to stagnant water, which reduced the soil strength due to the continuous rainfall since 2 PM that day. CIDB issued a stop-work order to the construction site in that case while an investigation was being carried out.
“The scheduling of construction works should take into account weather conditions, so that works that are at high risk and involving the use of machinery can be carried out before the rainy season,” said CIDB Malaysia Chief Executive Dato’ Sr Mohd Zaid Zakaria.
