The Green Building Index, Malaysia’s industry-recognised national green building certification system, is a benchmark for energy efficiency, environmental consciousness, and sustainable design in the built environment.

From a scientific standpoint, GBI rating tools enable precise measurement and evaluation of a building’s environmental footprint. Metrics such as energy efficiency, water usage, and carbon emissions are carefully assessed, ensuring compliance with global sustainability standards. These tools empower developers to integrate renewable energy systems, optimise natural lighting, and enhance thermal comfort, all key components in reducing operational costs and ecological harm.

During the Future Cities Summit, which took place during International Construction Week (ICW) and BuildXpo 2024 at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur, Sarly Adre Sarkum, Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM), highlighted the transformative potential of the Green Building Index (GBI) rating tools in driving sustainability within Malaysia’s construction industry.

According to Sarly, incorporating GBI tools into architectural and construction processes enhances energy performance and fosters a scientific and social revolution within the industry.

Socially, GBI-certified projects set the stage for healthier, more livable urban spaces. Improved air quality, reduced heat islands, and enhanced community-focused designs elevate residents’ quality of life. Furthermore, they align with Malaysia’s vision for innovative and sustainable cities, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.

Sarly also emphasised the need for industry-wide adoption of GBI tools, saying these instruments are not merely technical guidelines but strategic enablers of a greener and more equitable future. Stakeholders should champion these practices as the long-term benefits outweigh the initial investments. Construction and building development is growing rapidly in this country, and we can see that developers and industry players have been adapting and applying the GBI rating tools.
