In a significant development for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, diesel locomotives essential for construction activities have started to arrive in Malaysia. The ECRL, a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and spurring economic growth, shared images of these locomotives on their official Facebook page on October 23.
The arrival of the diesel locomotives, brought into the country via the strategic Kuantan Port, marks a crucial step in the project’s progress. The locomotives are now stationed at the ECRL depot in Kuantan Port City, ready to play a pivotal role in supporting the ongoing construction activities. This achievement underlines the continued commitment to bringing the ECRL project to fruition.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke provided an update to the Dewan Rakyat last month, revealing that the ECRL project has already achieved an impressive 52.9% completion rate. The promising advancement reaffirms that the ambitious rail project remains on track and is well-poised to be completed by 2027.
The East Coast Rail Link spans an impressive 665km in length, with its initiation dating back to 2017. Its construction involves the development of an electrified rail network designed to greatly enhance connectivity between the East Coast states of Peninsular Malaysia, including Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, and the West Coast states, comprising Negri Sembilan, Selangor, and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya.
The arrival of these diesel locomotives not only signifies a step closer to project completion but also underscores the vital role that the ECRL will play in fostering economic development, enabling efficient transportation, and improving connectivity across the Malaysian Peninsula.
