CIDB PARTNERS MBAM TO UPSKILL LIFTING SUPERVISORS TO IMPROVE SAFETY IN CONSTRUCTION
KUALA LUMPUR (30 September 2021) – The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), is partnering the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) to implement an upskilling programme for Lifting Supervisors in Malaysia as part of the industry’s overall efforts to improve safety in construction.
The Lifting Supervisor Training, which is targeted at the staff of construction industry players, is part of CIDB’s Development in Training to enhance safety practices at construction sites. The initiative looks into a broad range of construction skill and advancement programmes. Importantly, this collaborative effort is in line with the overall efforts of the Government and industry players to enhance the skills of construction supervisors.
A lifting supervisor is part of a lifting team whose role is to coordinate, plan and conduct any lifting work in construction. The lifting team usually comprises of a lifting supervisor, a crane operator, a rigger, a signalman and a tagline holder.
Each job scope carries a specific role, and there needs to be high levels of communication and coordination at an operation site to ensure the highest safety standards during the lifting process. “Contractors and construction personnel are encouraged to continuously upskill and update their knowledge in construction as the industry has become more advanced with technology and innovation.
This programme is in line with CIDB’s Construction Strategic Plan 2021-2025, which details Safety and Professionalism as one of its core pillars in driving the construction industry forward,” said CIDB chief executive, Datuk Ir. Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid. He further added, 685 Lifting Supervisors have been trained and that does not include another 20 participants that have joined the training today. With this additional 20 participants, we have close to 700 lifting supervisors trained since 2019. For today’s training, one contractor, Sedia Bena Sdn Bhd has committed and sent 20 of their supervisors for the lifting supervisor’s training.
The high number of sign-ups from this company is certainly encouraging, and we hope to see more companies follow in their footsteps. We have designed this lifting supervisor training together with MBAM not only to train our participants in acquiring the right skills but also to develop the instincts to ensure the safety of those on-site. Since 2019, CIDB has been subsidizing 50% of the training fees for lifting supervisor and about 539 construction supervisors have benefited from training.
Besides lifting supervisor’s training subsidy, CIDB also subsidizing 50% for Safety & Health Officer (SHO) and Site Safety Supervisor’s trainings. Some 1,836 construction personnel have benefited from this subsidy provided by CIDB for all the above said supervisory courses and training. CIDB has allocated a sizeable budget close to RM1 million to subsidise Safety and Health Officers (SHO), Site Safety Supervisor (SSS) and the lifting supervisor trainings for next year.
